Well I made it through the first week at Art Center. It was a rush and its only going to get more and more hectic. Im really excited to be here there are lots of really talented people here. I will probably not be posting a lot but we'll see.

At long last the final wait has begun, one month til classes start. We are getting settled in our new place, with all the adjustments that entails. Glendale is definitely a different place from Blackfoot Idaho, but I am loving it here for sure. I need to start drawing more so I can be up to speed when I start so I am not completely embarrassed when I start school.

We took our parents to campus the other day and they were pretty impressed with all it has to offer. It was a good trip. I'm really excited again. The pendulum swings from excitement to fear/panic. For now at least I will try and enjoy my last little bit of time off.

We are moving on Wednesday!!! It's Finally here. I have to stick out two more half days at work and then in the immortal words of William Wallace... " I get to be unemployed for a little bit before I go back to school for my second Bachelors degree"... I was summarizing his words of course, and you have to supply the accent, but I'm pretty sure he and I see eye to eye.

Anywho for those of you that told me about my sketchbook in Rexburg, thankyou, but i wasnt able to make it up to get it. Besides that is one of my Horcruxes, so I would appreciate those of you with Basalisk fangs to keep your distance.

I am really excited if you couldnt tell. I will have about a month to prepare for classes, and I need it, my stuff stinks right now. I will be drawing pool side as my daughter takes advantage of our new apartments amenities.

I will be setting up a new blog for my school work and such, but I will put a link on here so check back in a few months just to see.

Last night I officially started the packing process. I want this move to go as smoothly as possible so I am starting early. I packed all our movies into a box. Progress yay!. Oh side-note to any art buddies in the area, I am getting rid of my full size metal light table because I don't want to move it. It has a glass top and 4 fluorescent bulbs and works great and Im only asking $75. I got it from work here at the paper and it has served me well. SO anyone interested just let me know. Im trying to get rid of it this week.

I just put our deposit down for our new place in Glendale CA. It's getting real now people. Im really excited it's only 6 miles from Campus so that aint too bad at all. It's right next door to the church building and 1/2 mile from a preschool. I want to move now, but alas I must wait 57 more days.

So I went home for lunch today and peeked into the mail box..... I GOT IT!!!! the acceptance letter from Art Center. I have been accepted to the Fall 2011 Entertainment design program. I will be 1 of approximately 18 students to start the program this year from over 200 applicants world wide. So needless to say Im excited. The semester starts in Sept. so we are tentatively planning on moving down in the end of July. I kinda don't know what to say other than YEAH!!!! It means going back to school but it also means going back to school. Just thought I would share.

I used google Sketchup 7 for the basic form and then painted over it in photoshop. I really like the technique it saves a lot of drawing time. Anyway let me know what you think of it.

This is a method I use a lot to rough in value for environments. It's all in photoshop and only takes a couple of hours usually. I am general going for mood and feeling over refined detail so I don't linger long on the details, just enough to communicate. Still perfecting technique but here is my latest attempt.

I came across an article that I found very interesting. It makes some valid points and explores some things I think every artist has gone through. I have included the link below for the full article, but One thing that really stuck out to me was at the begining... Chris Solarski is talking about how art influences media and vice versa...

The notion that artistic ability is a divine gift has proliferated throughout history -- it's an idea often propagated by artists themselves. However, Michelangelo, the Renaissance genius did, in fact, experience the odd lousy day of drawing just like the rest of us. He burned many of his sketches to conceal the intense work and discipline that was vital to the creation of his masterpieces.

"If people only knew how hard I work to gain my mastery, it wouldn't seem so wonderful at all."

Its a great thought. Michelangelo burning his crappy sketchbooks... I just thought I would share this with you.

So not that anyone ever reads my blog anymore, but I finished the props section of the hunger games project today. The guns look really good and Im excited to start on the characters next. This will be sorta like my dream diary ( only less star and unicorn stickers) If by chance you are reading this Hazzah! Rejoice you are among a very select and small group. ( not to be mistaken with exclusive ) Any who I am now going to reward myself with some StarCraft II action... yeah!! cya... (to nobody)

K so its only been like 3 weeks since I made the decision to change projects and I am already way farther then I was on the other on that was like 3 months in the making to that point. Im finishing up the props and items section of the project which consists of three items. The reaping ball, Katniss' Bows from all three books and finally some guns. I just finished do the line work in Illustrator on the guns and Ill start rendering them out tomorrow. But I thought I would post a little somethin' cause its been a while. Let me know what you think. I love to hear from you guys.

K so I took the tinniest of breaks from my project to read a series that my siblings have been reading and told me I would love. The Hunger games by Suzanne Collins. They are amazing and I have decided that I am now officially changing my application project to concepting these books. I have already got some great ideas going and am super excited. If you have not read them yet first repent and then go buy them. I am working on designing the Reaping ball that holds all of the tributes names, and its almost done. Going against my nature I am going to try and hold off showing it till I can have a little more and then dump it all at once. Anyway I'm really excited and motivated to work hard on this. So stay tuned.....

K so i have been squirming trying to flesh some things out for my current project, and things weren't going my way, which makes me grumpy. Anyway it finally hit me.... do 50 more thumbnails then! I thought " now there is an Idea" and sure enough there are some great things coming out of it. So my new moto is "when in doubt do 50 thumbnails". Here are the 3 I picked to refine a little more. I would love to be able to take all of them to finish, but its not going to happen. So I spent about 2 hours on each of them just fleshing out the form in a 3/4 view. Im not sure if I have a for sure favorite yet so I would like to hear what you think. From here I'm going to pick some robes and refine those as well. once I have a winner for the robes and the heads I will do a final character combining the two, and add some color. Then the character will be done.

My full time job is at times slow so I have come up with a plan. I have been doing some environment tests for some good times. I dont know why but I really love to paint snow scapes. Maybe its my Canadian heritage or my deep seeded love for the empire strikes back (....Ben!...Degobah!....) but here is one I did today. I might end up using these as backgrounds for some environment work but its some fun practice regardless. Please let me know what you think. This one would be a night or early morning scene, thats why the values are so low.

Well the long awaited trip has come and gone. It was a crazy one for sure.
The original plan was to fly to Vegas and drive the 4 hours to Pasadena which happened more or less. Sunday our flight was delayed by 4 hours so we got to Vegas at like 3 in the morning and had to get up at 5 to make our Car reservation. So by the time we got to our Hotel and everything we got like an hour of sleep before we Drove out. Then our wonderful GPS system kept trying to get us lost in CA. But despite all the opposition we made it to Art Center with like 20 min to spare. I was Soooo nervous as you can understand, I was literally shaking. My wife was with me thankfully, and it was kind of a do or die moment for me.I was thinking "this is it, if they say I dont have a shot then I can move on" I was really that nervous. Well I don't want to brag or go into sorted details of the interview, but it went VERY VERY WELL!!! and it looks like I will be making the Move to Pasadena next summer. Now the application process isnt until Feb "offically" but I can start planning with some confidence about this next step after that interview. The people there were amazing. I was expecting a bunch of "art" snobs who look down from on high and define style and what is "it" but I couldnt have been further from the truth. I met with Corey an admissions counselor, and he was great. Even beyond Great he really was looking out for what Art Center had to offer me specifically.

Im really excited. The Entertainment Design degree is a farely new one at the Art Center and they only Accept 18 people per year. And Im not accepted yet but it's looking very promising. In order to apply they want to see a specific portfolio that shows a solid process of conceptual thinking. They want me to pick a story basically and just do all the concept art for the Characters, vehicles, props, and Environments... so basically like my Senior BFA project. Ive Picked a story and Im starting on the project already. I dont think I will be posting a lot of stuff from it until its a little closer to being done, and Im closer to the Feb deadline. This also means that I will probably be cutting down on posting overall as well. Not that it makes a big difference, their are only like 4 people who read this anyway. So to you 4 you can now have that 2 1/2 mins of your life back which my posts have been consuming.

For anyone who is interested my new project is a story which I have come up with, and takes place between the first and second world wars and involves aliens, Nazis, and the Occult. Im excited. So Thats my really good news for the day. If you want a more detailed version of how things went I would be more than happy to send you a 20 page email that will contain mostly !!!!!!! and expressions like " I CANT BELIEVE IT"

Well there are a number of reasons this is a big post for me. 1. this is my 100th post on this blog so woohooo!!! 2. Today something happened to me that, for me anyway is a big deal. Today I am now a personal contact to Nicolas Bouvier on CGHub!!! Yeah. For those of you uncultured among us Nicolas usually goes by the name Sparth! and if you still don't know who that is you have no business being on this blog in the first place, so off you go... are they gone? good. So this is probably not as big of a deal as I am making it out to be but it gives me a direct line to one of my Heroes. Its even more direct than email cause on this site lets you exchange contacts kind of like being friends on facebook or other networks... which means I am Sparths' anonymous, pseudo friend online that he has never met. Which is closer than what I was yesterday.

But I just figured out how to make wheels in Maya. YEAH WHEELS. I decided to model something in crazy detail for my portfolio, and well As I was driving home the other day I noticed one of those tank trailers they use to haul gas or milk or whatever in. So Im doing one of those things of my own variation. Its been a tonne of fun so far AND NOW I CAN DO WHEELS. These arent my first wheels but they are the prettiest so far. Anyway Im really excited about it, but you will probably just say... hmm they look like wheels big deal.

The $13 admission to see Avatar in 3d is probably the best money I have spent in a while, and that's saying something cause we just got a new 50in Plasma and a new Xbox 360 elite. This movie has literally changed the way I look at all movies. I didn't just watch it... I experienced it. If you think you have seen a movie in 3d before then you are mistaken because Avatar redefines what is possible and even conceivable in movie making. The way the cinematography moves your eye with an extra dimension is something that everyone needs to witness for themselves. The movie is happening before your own eyes and you cant help but to buy into the characters and worlds that are being presented to you. At one point during an action sequence I actually winced and jerked out of the way of what I deemed an actual object being hurled at me. James Cameron truly understood how to handle the 3d aspect of this process and doesn't insult the audience with cheap parlor tricks that other 3d movies have been riddled with. It adds so much to the total experience that it would be a waste not to see this movie in 3D. The format it was designed for. So if you are reading this then do yourself a favor call someone with an passion for good movie making that is of equal or of greater value than your own and go see this as soon as possible, because you are going to want someone with which to connect as soon as the credits start to roll and the brain matter starts to ooze out of you ear canal. I am always ready to geek out about it as well should you be lacking of people willing to accommodate. GO SEE IT!

So Ive been browsing some of my former classmates blogs lately in an attempt to keep in touch, and leave creepy vague comments and critiques. Ive been waiting and waiting and stressing about getting a "real" job that will start me on my great art adventure which will end in me actually being able to support my family and having a semblance of normality. Then it struck me " It's Christmas MOFO!" people probably arent hiring anyway and you are being a tool when you stress so much. So THAT'S IT im going to ease up a bit for the holidays so I can actually stand to be around myself. Things will happen when they happen so look for more creepy comments and me reaching out more instead of being completely cut off.

A super quick super loose sketch. Inspired by my wall calendar in front of my desk. It could possibly be pushed into something a little more substantial, but it was just a fun little excercise in Painter and Photoshop. Enjoy it for what its worth.
